King Mountain Preserve

A 108-acre preserve rising above the main streets of Larkspur.

Rangers Recommend

  • King Mountain Loop Trail, an easement through private property, circles the top of the mountain, and intersects the Ladybug Trail leading to Larkspur Creek.
  • In the canyon, a bridge crosses the creek. Take a rest on a rustic bench.
  • Climb Citron Fire Road for sweeping views.
  • Travel on to Dawn Falls in Baltimore Canyon Preserve via connecting Ladybug Trail.
  • Dogs are welcome. Dogs must be leashed on trail, and under voice command on fire roads, with leash readily available.
  • After an outing, enjoy lunch in downtown Larkspur.

Naturalist Notes

  • Stands of coast live oak, tanoak, and California bay trees grow alongside the roads and trails.
  • Look for milkmaids, monkeyflower, and California poppies in spring.
  • You may see neighborhood volunteers pulling invasive broom and acacia along lower trails, to help native species thrive.
  • Check out the iNaturalist field guide. Add your own observations.
