Benches and Picnic Areas

Improved and accessible seating in a popular San Rafael park.

UPDATED JULY 30, 2020

Project Description

Aging wood benches and picnic tables in Lagoon Park had reached the end of their service. Parks’ landscape architects worked to install 23 new eight-foot long wooden benches, and 3 new accessible picnic areas..

The new benches, selected for comfort, durability, and attractive design, were installed on freshly leveled or concrete footings. They have rolled wood slats and round metal arms, reflecting design elements favored by the Civic Center's architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Work on the picnic areas included demolition of existing decomposed granite paving and existing low wood retaining walls, as well as removal of the old picnic tables. The three new picnic areas were built next to the path for accessibility. Surrounded by new redwood retaining walls, these areas are footed in stabilized decomposed granite surfacing. Each has a new 8’ long, accessible, redwood picnic table.
